guitarra pre-update
ok, now i'm planning on replacing my bridge pickup with a seymour duncan quarter pound tele pickup, and possibly routing a p90 where my neck pickup is (that or i'll just find a neck pickup that i like). i also have to get a new volume pot as i @#%$ my last one up. anyway, if anyone has any suggestions for the neck pickup i'd certainly like to hear them, unless you feel like telling me that single coils suck, then you can just kindly @#%$ off.

Re: guitarra pre-update
Personally, I like P-90s in the neck position. They do cause permanent damage, though, when you install them. I guess there's no real way to tell if it sounds good with both the 1/4 pounder and p-90 unless you just F'n do it.
In other news, I will be ordering my custom Jazzmaster soon. I juts bought a neck for an early 80's Ibanez Roadstar II for $36 on e-bay and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. I really like those necks. I'll have to refin the headstock, but it's a lot cheaper than ordering an entire new neck. All I need to do is figure out what finish I want it in. I'm leaning towards either natural gloss on swamp ash or brown stain on swamp ash. I'm so excited about it it's hard for me to think about anything else.

Re: guitarra pre-update
yeah, but routing a humbucker into the middle also causes some permanant damage. i think i'll go with the p90 as i also like how they sound. if it sounds like @#%$, i can always get a new pickguard and put my old pickup back in.
and i think brown stain would be pretty damn badass. you better have some pics for us (i'll honor bornincrimson's requests for pics once i get done with my next modifications).

Re: guitarra pre-update
Yeah, I think I'm going to go with a medium brown stained ash body, with a black/white/black pickguard, and cream Jazzmaster pickups and vol/tone knobs. Couple that with a one piece maple neck and chrome hardware all the way around... I think it's going to be quite a beautiful sight. You're damn right I'll be taking pics of the process.
I'm waiting to put in the order for my neck to arrive from e-bay. The guy said he'd get it to me either today or tomorrow. If it's in as good of shape as he indicated in his post (he's got over 100 pos. feedback), then I'll use that neck. If the neck is unusable, though, I'll also have to orer a neck from Warmoth.
Pedals and amps are good. I own four amps, probably eight or ten pedals, and one stinkin' guitar. I figure it's time I start to correct this imbalance.

i put $250 down on an swr workingman's 15 bass amp today. i should have it paid off within three weeks. also, i should be getting some money in the mail so i can order my pickups for my guitar.
currently i have one good amp (two if you count the one on layaway), two bad amps (both broken practice amps, eleven or so pedals, one electric guitar, one acoustic guitar, and two basses.

I have one of those SWR WM15's, I use it for vocals during band practice! If I was to ever play bass in a band, I wouldn't think about buying another amp, or at least, not at first. It's a good amp. It's been very reliable. My wife plays bass through a 4x10 cabinet, but I'm really starting to think that I prefer the sound of 15" speakers to 10's. Of course, that's my preference.

i would definitely agree
i would have to agree there, johnmfer -
i much prefer a 15 or a combo of a 15
and 10s rather than 10s alone...
technically, most 10s cannot even
correctly physically output the low
E note - and if you're going lower
than that, there should definitely be
a 15 involved!
did you check out the new death of
marat set-up last friday? 2x10 and a 15.
aguilar preamp and aguilar power amp.
goddamn. like butter.

Re: i would definitely agree
That bass rig was *easily* the best I've ever heard from a local band. It's comparible in quality to my favorite bass tones ever... Justin Chancellor (Tool), Greg Edwards (Failure), and Paul Malinowski (Shiner). Ironically, or maybe not, all three of those bassists use Mesa rigs with at least 2 15" speakers. I just hope John quits changing out his gear - he's got the best tone in town, I hope he realizes it. I had a chance to talk with him a little about it after the show, I hope I emphasized enough how much I enjoyed hearing it. That Aguilar equipment makes Ampeg stuff look (or sound) like cheap plastic toys from the dollar store.

if you don't mind, john, i think i'll put in my two cents on your guitar. i really think that a tortoise shell pickguard would be far superior to it's wbw counterpart on your guitar.
also, i said a few posts ago that i was planning on buying some pedals, but my friend and i decided to start building pedals. first of all we'll build a big muff for him, and probably an overdrive for me. they'll probably turn out terribly, but it'll be fun. and i'm sure i'll still buy a couple of pedals as well.

Re: Another favorite bass tone
I know... now our trio is complete.
I live on the outskirts of Houston, and there's probably 15,000 high school students within a 3 mile radius of me. Instead of robbing a bank, maybe I should just steal somebody's lawn mower and hire myself. I like the idea of working one day a week, personally.
At least I recklessly spent some money earlier this summer. Bought a second acoustic guitar, a Seagull S6 Folk. Truth be told, all the fancy stuff I wanted to mess around with can probably wait, because I've only picked up an electric like twice in the last two weeks. I've been into acoustic stuff the last several months.
I'm still hoping I can start up the tele idea I had, though. I need something new to mess around with when I go back to school and get back with the band.

Mig, The pickgard is going to be bwb, not wbw. I hate those big ugly white pickguards. Ugh. That's one of the reasons why I don't just go with the new American reissue Jazzmaster, the custom color ones all come with big ugly white pickguards. Mine will have the SRV strat look (sort of), with the black guard and cream pickup covers and knobs, with chrome, beautiful chrome hardware. Juicy. I have a tortoise shell guard on my current JM, with a sunburst finish. I'm done with both bursts and shell guards, at least for the time being. I've been staring down at the burst finish and shell guard for over seven years now and I'm looking for something new.
I think the idea of building your own pedals is pretty F'n cool. Even if it sounds crappy, YOU made it, so you'll use it for some effect somewhere and it'll sound beautiful.

Mig, if you're looking into routing out space for a p-90 in a tele... you might want to try this:
skgs.guitaristforum.com/sk/Index.htm
I heard about this guy on Harmony Central. He's some guitar tech or something who winds pickups as a side business, and he makes a couple pickups called the s-90 and the t-90, which are single coils for strats and teles that supposedly sound similar to a p-90.

not only the look, but the only way to get true p90 tone is from a p90. a t90 (or whatever the hell it's called) may sound similar, but it isn't the same

True. Why go 90% when you can get the full 100.
Incidentally, one pickup config I'd like to try would be p-90/humbucker/p-90. I've been thinking about doing humbucker/p-90/humbucker to an SG; that would be pretty easy, as it would only require routing of a middle slot.
I think the p-90/hum/p-90 is more interesting though... problem is, I can't really think of many guitars for a few hundred bucks or so with a set of p-90s... so it would take some pretty heavy modifications to something like a strat or tele or whatnot.

actually, i don't think that would even be possible with a tele unless you had a custom bridge made, or just replaced the bridge with something else altogether. i say find a squier (or some other cheap brand) strat or something and go for it. that or just do the p90 in your sg

Re: Another favorite bass tone
It would definitely be a strat thing, as the big metal tele bridge would be tough to get around. I have a cheapo Epi Strat I might try something on. Swimming pool route beneath as well, so I don't think it would even take much routing. None for the humbucker, a little on the edges (and maybe some deepening) for the p90s. It's already got a nice fat neck.
That's a strange guitar. Loudest unplugged electric I've ever heard. Quite resonant. Perhaps plywood has undiscovered tonal possibilities?
Edit, update: I flipped my neck humbucker upside down on my SG today. I had heard previously that it supposedly gives a little less muddiness, more clarity. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but it seems like it worked. Sounds almost as clear as a strat with the neck/middle pickups selected. Almost.
I'm guessing the sound cleans up because the humbucker's active coil is now close to an inch further from the neck... almost like a mid position humbucker? Then again, I snapped my high E string just beforehand, and so grabbed a new pack of strings... and it might be that, too.

Re: Another favorite bass tone
So, I finally got the order in on my new John Lipfert Signature model Fender Jazzmaster. I went with the clear gloss... I saw a '64 Jazzmaster on e-bay that had been refinished to natural gloss with a black pickguard and I sighed and knew that it was what I had to have (over the transparent brown I had been thinking about for the last couple of weeks).
The guy at Warmoth I spoke with was really cool and knowledgeable. The parts should be here in about 6 weeks.
The real deal: I'm basically getting a brand new, totally custom made, licensed by Fender guitar for the EXACT same price as a new, plain old boring generic used by everyone, American Strat.
I'm excited and nervous and I just want the next six weeks to scream on by so I can have it and put it together.

Tele p90
Hey, I recently played a FrankenTele over at musicians discount w/ a p-90 in the neck pos. -- no pickguard and black --I think its a MIM and $250-
It plays pretty damn good.
Hey John, Where do you order Jazzmaster parts??
I think I need a new bridge on mine--its got the original and its all beat to heck.
I'm also thinking about getting new pickups for the Hagstrom Swede (70's euro les paul copy) any reccomendations for something bright and midrangey?

A tale of two bridges
Yeah, Warmoth has this really cool new Mustang bridge. Having owned both a Mustang and a JM, Rich, you already know about the ins and outs of the two bridges, but I'll kinda spell it out for everyone else's sake so they can know too. Basically, the Jazzmaster bridges have saddles with multiple grooves that aren't very deep, so the strings bounce around from groove to groove when you play hard, causing tuning issues. However, the JM saddles allow for individual height adjustment, which is very cool. The Mustang bridges have saddles with one groove so the strings don't bounce around, but the saddles aren't individually adjustable for height.
Warmoth now has just started making a Mustang bridge where they drill out for height adjustment screws on the low E, A, B and high E strings. It solves this classic JM/Mustang bridge problem. Of course, it's twice the price, but I think totally worth it. I wanted to order one from them, but I spent enough money today. Maybe sometime in the future...
Anyway, while you're on their site, check out the thrift shop, it's pretty nifty.

Well, if I were to get any kind of stickers or inlays or anything like that, it would say JEL, which are my real initials. However, I don't think I'm going to do anything like that. SRV already took the originality out of that.
Yeah, Rich, I'd love to check it out. I'm going to try to make it out to the next Transgojobot show. I can't remember where or when it is, but I have a flyer from Chad at home.

now i've decided to try a new magnet swap with my humbucker. i was taking apart one of the single coil pickups given to me by bornincrimson, and because of the size of the magnet, thought that i could have two different magnets in my humbucker. now i just need to find an alnico ii magnet and i'm going to try this out. if anyone has one laying around and they'd like to sell/donate it, it would be appreciated. actually, if anyone has any old guitar parts that they don't want anymore i'd be happy to take them. i love messing around with all of this stuff.

Oops, sorry Richard, the flyer I have is for ScramJet, not Transgojobot. You play in too many bands for me to keep them all straight. Do you use the Traynor in all your bands?
erickarim, check e-bay or Harmony central classifieds to see if that's a good deal. I'm the anti-EMG, and can find no use for active pickups (especially active humbuckers) when beautiful sounding single coils are so plentiful and inexpensive.
Mig, when you change the magnets in the pickups, does it matter which way is north or south? It seems like you might end up changing the tone depending on how the magnetic field sets up. But then again, magnets generally put out a symetrical magnetic field, right? Do you use hot glue to keep them on? Do you have to wire anything to them?

Re: guitarra pre-update
john-north and south will make a difference in tone (i've heard it sounds out of phase), but i'm not sure that it's a huge difference. also, the magnets in humbuckers are usually sealed with wax, but there's no need to use glue or any other substance. the magnet will stay in place by being pinched between the pole pieces as well as the base plate on the bottom. i hope i made this understandable (i'm much too lazy to go back and read it), if not i'll try to clarify better.

Huh. I'll have to take a look at some of the spare pickups I have laying around over the weekend.
In other news, I'm looking for a hardtail strat body. I have two guitar necks laying around at my place now and no bodies to put them on. I want to build a beater guitar, maybe a strat with Japanese Jazzmaster pickups? Who knows. Just something I can take to practice and not have to worry abou the neck warping.

also, i plan on ordering my new pickups next week (i'm sure something will set it back a week or two, though), and i've decided on a quarter pound for tele bridge pickup, a custom custom humbucker, and a bridge vintage p90 for the neck (by the way, these are all seymour duncan pickups) as well as two push/pull knobs for my volume and tone (coil split and bridge on/off, respectively). i'm also thinking about getting a black bridge p'up, a zebra middle (creme/black), and a creme neck pickup. then i'll have a black/creme/black/creme look with my pickups. should i go with this or all black pickups?

Re: guitarra pre-update
As for the black/creme thing, it should probably depend on the other colors of the guitar. That might be interesting. So, you'll be running the gamut with pickups. I want to see some pics.
As for the 2x12 thing, man, I'm kicking myself in the ass right now because I've had mine sitting on top of an ADA 2x12 cab that I'm not using for anything right now, and all this time I could've had those speakers running too. I feel like such a dumbass.
Anyway, I'm going to be ordering at some point a Carvin strat body. I've got an old ibanez neck in good shape that I want to attach to something, and I think I'll order the body and pickguard and a fixed bridge from Carvin, mainly because they sell unfinished strat bodies drilled for a hardtail bridge for only $99. I'll probably tung oil it because I don't know how to do spray finishes. I'm going to throw in two humbuckers I have laying around, both dimarzios, a super distortion and an air zone, but I haven't decided which for the neck and which for the bridge. Both are wired for coil taps, so I'm thinking about two mini toggles for that someplace on the lower portion of the body by the output jack and one big fat three way selecter on the lower horn like a Jazzmaster. It'll be my beater guitar that I do mods like this on. It'll probably take some extra drilling and/or routing, but when you have a guitar body that only costs $99, fucking something like that up becomes more affordable!
So, I was thinking how cool it would be to get multiple pickguards made for a strat, all wired and ready to plug in and play, but with different pickup configurations. I'd like one with two p-90s (although they are bolted to the wood), one with two humbuckers, three singles like a strat, two strat cool rails, two filtertron pickups like in the Rickenbacker 330s, and maybe two Jaguar pickups, and other combinations as well.

Re: guitarra pre-update
that's a great idea for the pickguards.
i'm going to order the pickups tonight. i think the black/creme combo should look fine on my guitar, and if it doesn't i don't care. i care about the sound more than the look. it's funny, after this purchase i'll have spent more than double what i bought the guitar for.
yeah, a guitar cab plugged into that swr sounds really good, it can't pick up the lows like the 15 can, and it can't pick up the highs that the tweeter does, but it adds everything in between and sounds amazing. try it.

i ordered the pickups and pots last night. i ordered 500k pots because i couldn't find any 250k push/pulls. after ordering, i found out that i could have purchased the 250k pots from a different site. by using the 500k pots, i'm risking having an overly bright guitar, so i'm going to have to bridge a capacitor to the output jack to compensate. we'll just have to see how it all works out.

ive got .69-.13's on the sg, and .42-.10's on the ibanez, both guitars have wound g strings..on the sg, ive got a strange bigsby knockoff trem but i swear its better quality than one, longer tremolo bar and i guess due to the heavier strings it stays in tune better than other bigsby's that i've used. i've got no neck pickup, instead, i've got an 1/8'' male output hard wired in so that i can plug any variable of things into it, like gameboy (!) am radio, md, or tapeplayers...i've got a hole drilled in the back of the guitar to feed the cable thru, it works great too, not too hot or too cold ever..i've also got a straplock in the position where the old fixed bridge used to be for extra comfort, thats my main guitar that i use, the ibanez is just a standard early roadster, it feels so heavy in comparison to the sg though, i dont know what kind of wood they used for those but it feels like rocks..the neck on those roadsters is completely awesome too, the only necks i've found that i like more are the oldschool peavey's..i'll try and get some pictures very soon...

Shawn, I agree with you completely about the necks on those early 80s roadstars. I just picked up one (just the neck) off of e-bay for less than $50 - that's what I'll be using for the carvin strat body. I'm looking forward to my frankenstein project as much as my jazzmaster project!
Mig, that back order shit is why I usually try to buy at local shops. There's a great one in Mesa called the Music Shop, the repair center in the back has tons of stuff and the prices are good. But of course, I don't know where you live.

yeah, i'm in missouri...mesa's a bit far. anyway, the place i ordered from has really good service. they're going to send me the rest of my order and send me the backordered pickup as soon as it comes (probably two weeks). fortunately, it's the bridge pickup, so i'll be able to do all the carving i need to do as soon as possible.

Ah, Missouri. I stayed at a hotel in Columbia in May of 1995; there was a thunderstorm so bad that night I was positive the whole city was about to be ripped down by a tornado. That same trip, I ate at a Taco Bell in Kansas City, but I don't remember what side of the border it was on. Two years and three months later, I was in Appleton City for a wedding for about four days. We left Blacksburg, Virginia at noon, and when we got there and the sun was coming up. That was one hell of a drive. Also, the drummer in our band grew up in Independence. Anyway, this is totally off topic. I'll stop.

Yeah, I'm starting to get a little excited about my Jazzmaster. It's going to be here soon. I put in the order almost a month ago, and they said six to eight weeks. I'm trying to forget about it so I can concentrate on real life. I don't have a digital camera either (the one I'd want costs way too much money) so I'll take pics and scan them in the old fashioned way.

just like everytime i mess with my pickups, i wired things wrong, so the pickups don't work correctly on the five-way switch. however, i was able to try out the p90 and it sounds incredible. now i just need to go back and do some wiring, but i'm oh so lazy....

This weekend I'm doing some contract work for my brother's company, and the money I make will buy me the rest of the parts for my "Frankly Franky" (that is what it will be named) frankenstein guitar project.
So, if your output jack is an asshole, then there must be 1/4" diameter shit turds shooting out of your guitar. That's pretty freaky. I can't say I've ever heard of that or have a solution on how to fix it. Sorry bud, you're on your own.

Re: guitarra pre-update
So I ordered a majority of the parts from Carvin this morning. This project is turning out to be a little more expensive than I'd like it to be. I still have to buy a pickguard, but I think I'm going to get Warmoth to cut one for me. It's only going to be another $20 or so. I am also talking with a guy about buying a set of HB's from a '78 SG. Yes, after all my anti-humbucker ranting, I'm going to be using HB's in this project! So, the total cost so far is still under $300, which keeps it in the class of "beater" guitar for me, but if I get the pickups it'll go over that and I'll have a harder time "throwing around" this guitar.
Now all I have to do is figure out when I'll have time to work on my two projects!

fucking finally!
So! I called Warmoth yesterday to order a pickguard for my frankly franky strat. I wanted Warmoth to build it because it's an 11 hole guard with routing for two HBs and NO controls! I like it wild and out of control, baby! No, seriously, I'm going to put the knobs and such *exacly* where I want them, and I don't think anyone else could do that for me. While I was on the phone I asked the guy about my new Jazzmaster and he went to look for it, and came back about three minutes later saying "I had a hard time finding it because it's in our shipping dept. It'll go out tomorrow" to which I almost yelled out with joy loud enough to seriously disturb my co-workers. The Carvin stuff was supposed to ship yesterday, and the turnaround time on the pickguard I ordered is only 2-3 days... So, theoretically, by the beginning of next week I should have enough parts to put together my first two new guitars in over seven years! AAAAAAH! I can't wait!
By the way, Mig, have you been taking pictures of the work you've been doing? It's been hard to visualize using wood glue to hold a control plate together. Isn't it metal?

My guitar and pickguard are on their way. I love Warmoth. They sent me an e-mail with a link to UPS tracking for both orders. My guitar left on the 6th, went through Sacremento, then to Reno, and as of 7:37 this morning is on its way to Tempe. Whoo Hoo! The pickguard shipped yesterday and is still on its way to Sacremento. Carvin didn't do that shit for me. What's wrong with you, Carvin? I have no idea when my Carvin shit is going to get here. Bastards.

Re: fucking finally!
Okay, so I take back what I said about Carvin. I got home from work yesterday and UPS had delivered a box which contained everything I ordered from Carvin. Nothing was on backorder. I put the tuners on the neck, but I can't do much else until I get the pickguard on Monday. The body is routed for a standard strat config with three humbuckers, and I am doing two HBs, both with coil taps and a gibson style three way on the lower horn, with only one volume and one tone. I'm not going to know how far down the horn I can chisel out until I get the pickguard to see how much it covers, and I'm not going to start putting a finish on it until I get the chiseling done. And there's another reason...
My Jazzmaster went out to be delivered this morning at 7:30. I'm probably not going to be too concerned with the Frankenstrat until the new Jazzmaster is put together and ready to roll. In fact, I'm taking a half-day from work becuase I want to go home and make love to my new honey as soon as she gets through the door (sorry, Christine!).

So, the guitar is almost put together. Just need to fit the graphite nut, install the tuners, fit the neck to the body and set it up. I got all the parts for the frankenstrat, but that's on hold until the Jazzmaster is done, and I spend some time with my wife. I'll put up the pics as soon as they're developed and scanned.

Problems, problems...
Well, Last night I got the neck joined to the body, the nut fitted and sanded so the strings ever so lightly pass over the first fret, installed the tuners, strung it and set it up. When I was adjusting the pickup height, one of the cheap ass pickup hieght screws decided it would rather stay in the wood and stripped out completely. I had extra pickup covers, so in a flustered lack of patience I ripped off the pickup cover the screw was stuck in, and what do you know? The pickups cover was actually stronger than the screw, which broke completely flush with the body. So, here I was stuck with this broken piece of metal in a hole where I really need another screw to go. Anyway, I ended up drilling around it on four sides well over an inch into the body in order to get it out. Lacking any other decent resource to fill this now gaping hole in the body, I used a liberal amount of wood glue and strips from a bamboo shish kabob skewer from the kitchen to fill the hole, and this morning it looks usable. If it wasn't for this setback, I would have been up all night playing my new beauty, and I do have to say, this guitar is beautiful. My wife kept saying over and over, "Wow, that's a nice guitar!" Anyway, all the damage is covered by the pickups and the pickguard, so everything is okay.

That's what I call a beater guitar! What a finish you've got on that thing! The Fender Custom Shop's Relic department couldn't do a better job! What year is that thing?

Re: guitarra pre-update
it's a 1992. the finish is actually black with a white pickgaurd (wbw, technically), but the night i bought it (i believe i'm the third owner) i painted the pickguard grey. from there i painted the pickguard black after i coated the body in metallic silver acrylic paint. a few months later i threw some matte green paint on it, and the next day put metallic green acrylic paint over that. that was over a year ago, so now a lot of the paint has been rubbed/chipped off and some wood is exposed from bumping into various things.

Re: guitarra pre-update
...my favorite bit of guitar abuse, however, happened one time when i was jamming with some friends. my strat-using friend left his guitar on the ground, so i started operating the tremolo with my foot. since he knows nothing about his guitars, he got pissed off thinking that i was going to damage something. i then threw down my tele, and started jumping up and down on it saying "you see? guitars can take a lot more abuse than that" and things of that nature. we then went back to jamming a few minutes later. unfortunately, my friend that was playing bass that particular day told me that my other friend didn't even understand why i had made that little demonstration. nontheless, it was still worth it.

The other guitar
So, I got some work done on the other guitar this weekend. It's the carvin/Warmoth/Ibanez bastard frankenstein I'm putting together. I got the holes chiseled out for the 3 way switch on the lower horn, sanded the biatch, stained it with two thick coats of Minwax Ebony stain, and have the first coat of Tung oil on it. I also bought all the necessary drill bits and whatnot for drilling holes on the pickguard, but have not started drilling yet. The ebony stain turned out a little splotchy in places, but what do expect out of a guitar body that costs less than $100? It's going to look cool enough for punk rock. I have been working on it with renewed vigor for use during the fvck computers' next set, starting here in a week or two. Definately need the humbuckers going for that shee-aht.

I went to this show once with this really crappy band (called Suffering Truckertrash) and the guitarist had a telecaster with a duncan in the neck pos. and a gibson sg/lp neck and headstock. It was messed up. If anyone can imagine that or try to make it in photoshop, haha.
as for MY guitar set up, im going to buy a Univox Mosrite copy and but the same pickups that you would find in a gibson sg or lp studio. and i might get it refinished. I will also switch out the tuning keys.

Re: guitarra pre-update
So, I have put three coats of high gloss tung oil on the body and it almost looks like a thin polyurethane finish, like something you would find on a piece of furniture. I've been busy with band practice and playing Grand Theft Auto 3, so I've just been doing tung oil for now.
Mr Wozz - Warmoth can build all that stuff for you. they have LP headstocks for strat necks, and strat headstocks for LP necks. Personally, I don't think that it looks very good. Maybe it's just conditioning over a decade of seeing Les Pauls and strats, but it just doesn't look right to me. I'm partial to the fender six on a side thing myself. It just makes more sense.

Guitar necks
John, you said you got your Ibanez neck off ebay for how much? 30 bucks, was it?
I'm curious, as I'm trying to get together the thing I thought up awhile back, and was looking for a pretty cheap (used) replacement neck.
Anyone have any suggestions as to the price I should look for?

It was actually $48 after shipping. I recommend the Ibanez necks from the Roadstar II series. Nobody knows how awesome these necks really are, hence the price stays low. Here's one: Roadstar Neck

Eh, not standard I think... but it was the 80s so you never know. Maybe you could buy with or without? Mine came with a regular nut. I see Roadstar necks on ebay all the time, if you can wait a few weeks, I'm sure one will come up by then with a standard nut and stringtrees.

The solution
The solution is to turn both of them on at the same time. Your guitar will sound like a motherfucking chainsaw.
BZZZZZZZZ!
It could have its uses.
If you're interested in making it sound a little fuller, you can probably find some schematic or something to mod it over the internet. I know you can do it with an SD1, to T808 specs. Makes the sound a little rounder, thicker.
That, or fiddle with your EQ a bit (which you probably have already done.) Your amp's "ideal" EQ can change when you flick a pedal on, due to the fact that effects will often change some of your frequences as your signal runs through their electric gadgetry. I usually have to mess with it before I can get any satisfaction.

solution
oh yeah, i've already fiddled with the eq plenty. i've also tried both pedals at once. no matter what kind of mod i do, nothing will compare to the thickness of the big muff. i bought this pedal because i wanted some thinner distortion, and i was more than happy with it until now. i'll get over it eventually. however, for now i have solved the problem: i pulled out my acoustic and decided to play it for the next few days since i've been neglecting it. i also need to play my bass too...and while i'm thinking of it, work on my guitar some more...

Yeah but then you get to a show and suprise! Your Big muff doesn't work. Just like that. No explanation, no rhyme, no reason. The next day it'll work fine, but at that show, noooo! God help us all if they could build just one reliable big muff. The boss will never do that to you. I've never met a broken boss pedal.

back to the guitar building
So the guitar is coming along. I would have had the wiring finished last night if it wasn't for the goddamn cheap ass minitoggle switch I got from Carvin. I was tightening it down to the pickguard, and I wanted to get it nice and tight so it wouldn't loosen, and what do you know? Pop! The whole thing just ripped right apart. I mean, I'm not He-Man or anything, but really, that qualifies as a real Piece Of Shit in my book.
So, anyway, I just want to say that wiring a four conductor humbucker to a mini toggle for coil switching is a real pain in the ass. But, I got one done and the other is still looming. The electronics on this guitar, which is supposed to be just some beater piece of junk, are exponentially more difficlut because of these mini toggles.
Other than wiring up the second mini toggle and output jack, all I have to do is attach the neck and set it up. Just in time for the Fuck Computers! Be on the lookout!
